Abstract
Objectives£ºIt has been suggested that personality consisting of temperament and character could influence symptom expressions, and global functioning in schizophrenia. Also genetic loading has been reported to have a certain association with personality in schizophrenia. This study aimed to investigate any association of personality with symptom severity, global functioning and genetic loading in schizophrenia.

Methods£ºThe Korean version of Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) was administered to 48 stable schizophrenia patients (10 males, 38 females) of Seoul National Hospital and 48 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Relations among personality profiles and clinical variables including symptom severity, global functioning and family history were examined.

Results£ºCompared with controls, schizophrenic patients demonstrated significant differences in scores of all the temperament and character dimensions in TCI. High scores of positive symptom severity were associated with high self transcendence, low persistence and low cooperativeness. Significantly high novelty seeking and self transcendence scores are observed in the schizophrenia group with more genetic loading. High scores in positive dimension in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were associated with low self directedness and high self transcendence, and high Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale scores were associated with high self directedness.

Conclusions£ºThe Results of this study suggest that schizophrenic patients have significantly different personality profiles compared to healthy controls. The severity of positive symptom and global functioning of patients were correlated with low self directedness and high self transcendence, and higher scores in novelty seeking and self transcendence seem to be related with higher family loading. However, for duration of illness and number of admission does not have any relation to personality, the personality profile of schizophrenia seem to be one of essential chacarcteristics which is related to symptom severity rather than a part of the deteriorarion.
